I wasn’t too excited for a non-chocolate dish (after all, this is the chocolate bar, right?), but this was really good stuff. A saucer of warm caramel sauce and another scoop of vanilla ice cream round off the dish. Apple chunks, caramelized pecans, white chocolate chunks and crumbed cookies came on top of perfectly cooked Belgian style waffles. I’d heard good things about their waffles, and since this was their menu’s recommended item, we went straight for it. ![]() Moving on, we also had the Apple Pie Cinnamon Waffles ($18.90). But take no credit away from the cake, it was divine. The chocolate shake itself is quite underwhelming though, way too fluffy and light for my liking with little flavour to it. And a light chocolate shake to cleanse your palate in between bites. ![]() The base chocolate sauce is a much milder, milk chocolate foundation, which is sweeter but not nearly as intense, again a nice contrast here. Here, molten chocolate lava oozes out of the warm cake centre- combined with the rich, chocolate sponge, it’s a perfect complement to the cool vanilla ice-cream on the side. The best thing about Max Brenner’s desserts is simply the different variations of chocolate on the same plate. ![]() Some people claim that Max Brenner has a fantastic chocolate souffle but they are in fact referring to this (more lava cake than anything) in case you were looking for chocolate souffle on the menu. On the side, a small glass of chocolate shake with whipped cream to finish, and a shaker of chocolate sauce if there isn’t enough (there was way too much). First thing on the list? Max Brenner’s famous chocolate lava cake. Well, on my second visit, I made sure to go big or go broke. The Melting Chocolate Truffles Heart Cake and Shake ($16) was exceptionally good – the cake was indulgent, rich, moist and oozing a delicious molten chocolate lava. Be it a small flask of melted milk chocolate to pour, or chocolate bars to nibble on, there’s always going to be chocolate done in a different way to tingle and excite all the senses. Each of their sweet treats often comes with small portions of differently prepared chocolate. In each dish, moderation is simply not enough. From all the variety, it’s easy to identify the key idea behind all their desserts: Decadence. The menu is chockfull of chocolate items, from hot chocolate drinks to chilled chocolate frappes, to waffles, fondue sets and other chocolatey creations. Well, whether or not there is a face to the name, Max Brenner’s takes itself very seriously. Max Brenner or the “bald man” as he is so affectionately referred to is not exactly a person – rather the name comes from a combination of the owners’ names: Max Fichtman and Oded Brenner. The bar is a quaint, cosy area with dim but sufficient lighting, Warm brown hues add to the chocolate theme, and sacks of cocoa add to the impression: they’re serious about the chocolate here. The term ‘chocolate bar’ is an interesting pun, and it fits quite sweetly here. Well, I gave into temptation last night at the Esplanade branch, and let’s get into the review, shall we? It’s a mantra that speaks to me as a chocolate lover myself, and I can’t ever walk past it without considering whether or not to make a pit stop. Simple is good enough though, and chocoholics flood the outlets at the Esplanade and VivoCity daily. Max Brenner Chocolate Bar has a pretty simple concept: all things chocolate.
